Software I use, gadgets I love, and other things I recommend.
I get asked a lot about the things I use to build software, stay productive, or buy to fool myself into thinking I'm being productive when I'm really just taking a break. Here's a big list of all of my favorite stuff.
Workstation
16” MacBook Pro, M1 Max, 32GB RAM (2021), 4TB Storage
I was using an Intel-based 16” MacBook Pro prior to this and the difference is night and day. I’ve never heard the fans turn on a single time, even under the incredibly heavy loads I put it through with our various launch simulations.
LG C2 - 42” OLED screen
I use this as my primary monitor and it's solid. I'm a big fan of the OLED screen and the colors are great. I also use it for gaming on my Xbox Series X.
LG DualUp Ergo 28MQ780-B
I use this 28” panel as my secondary monitor. It's perfect for having a browser window open while I'm working, or keeping an eye on Slack and Discord messages.
IQUNIX L80 Keyboard
I use this keyboard with Cherry MX Red switches and opted for the RGB backlit version. It's a great keyboard and I love the way it looks. I also have a Apple Magic Keyboard when I'm traveling, but really enjoy the 80% layout with 83 keys of the L80.
12.9” M1 iPad Pro (2021), 1TB Storage
I primarily use my 12.9 iPad Pro for reading, as a secondary display when traveling, on the fly calls or watching videos. I also use it for taking notes and sketching out ideas.
Audio
Shure SM7B
I use this microphone for all of my audio recordings, podcasts and video calls. It's a great microphone bundled with the Cloudlifter and Scarlett 2i2 audio interface.
Scarlett 2i2
I use this audio interface with my Shure SM7B. Having the Cloudlifter is a must with the Shure SM7B, but the Scarlett 2i2 is a great audio interface. I use it with both my MacBook and my Gaming PC.
Development tools
Visual Studio Code
My editor journey has gone from trying to use Vim, to Sublime Text, to Atom, and probably others that I'm now forgetting. Visual Studio Code is by far the best I've used.
Warp
Warp has a lot of features. Every conceivable desire a terminal user might have has been foreseen and solved. And these are just the main attractions! If you spend a lot of time in a terminal, you'll love the split panes, hotkey windows and search functionality. Combined with Fig, it's my favorite terminal.
TablePlus
Great software for working with databases. Has saved me from building about a thousand admin interfaces for my various projects over the years.
Design
Figma
Sketching out IA maps in FigJam and then designing out wireframes and prototypes in Figma is one of the more pleasant parts of the product development process for me now. Figma changed the game.
